Create a Live Lesson Via the Web

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly version

If you have students in others schools who are taking your course, or if students are absent, you can teach your lesson live via the web through the Moodle server. Here are instructions:

  1. Seven Things to Consider Before Creating/Participating in a Live Lesson Via the Web (this will open in a separate tab or window - close it when you are finished)

  2. Log into iPortal (this will open in a separate tab or window, so you can follow these instructions).

  3. Click the course for which you'd like to create a live lesson via the web.

  4. In the upper right corner, click the Turn editing on button.

  5. Go to the week or topic for which you would like to create a live lesson via the web, pull down the Add an activity... menu and select BigBlueButton.

  6. For Virtual classroom name, give the live lesson via the web a name that reflects the topic you will teach, and make sure Students must wait until a moderator joins? is checked.

  7. If students don't receive grades based on their behavior, attendance and/or participation in a lesson, don't check any of the outcomes. If they do get graded in a lesson, select one of the outcomes for grading, if you use outcomes.

  8. If this lesson is for the whole class, don't select a group. If you are not ready for students to get onto this lesson after saving the settings, for Visible select Hide. If you are ready for students to get into this lesson when you are finished with these settings, select Show. Setting an ID number provides a way of identifying the activity for grade calculation purposes. If the activity is not included in any grade calculation then the ID number field can be left blank. If students do get graded for this activity, and if you have different grading categories (participation, homework, quizzes, tests, exams, etc.), select the category. If there is no grade for this activity, select Uncategorized.

  9. If you want to go directly to the live lesson, click the Save and display button. If you want to return to your course, click the Save and return to course button. If you selected Hide, the link will still be available for you when you return to the course, but not for the students.

  10. Before inviting students to the lesson, if this is the first time you have ever created a live lesson, click the link to this live lesson and go through these instructions to learn how to activate these tools:

  11. When you are finished with these instructions and ready to teach your live lesson via the web, if the link to the live lesson is hidden, click the Update icon below the grayed out link to the lesson. For Visible, select Show. Click one of the Save buttons at the bottom of the window to save these settings.
