Virtualization

Network Services provides a complete system platform that supports the execution of a complete operating system (OS). This platform is one of many separate platforms that share the same physical server.

Benefits:

  • Leasing a virtual computing machine means there is an annual cost as opposed to a periodic refresh cost.  The annual cost, over three years, is usually less than the refresh cost for equivalent hardware.
  • System disks for virtual machines are on high-speed SATA disk storage.
  • Network Services operates several physical machines that host virtual computing environments and can move the virtual machines onto available physical machines to balance load or to perform maintenance on physical machines.
  • Network Services provides server administration as a separate option (see Server & System Administration).
  • You may administer virtual machines provisioned by Network Services.
  • System drives of virtual machines are backed up daily by Network Services.
  • There is no asset to track and surplus.
  • Less consumption of power and HVAC.

The following costs are for a fully redundant virtual server and system disk.

CPU Memory System Disk Annual Base Cost Operating Systems
1 cpu 1 GB 15 GB disk $217 Windows 2003/RedHat Linux
1 cpu 2 GB 15 GB disk $228 Windows 2003/RedHat Linux
2 cpu 2 GB 15 GB disk $296 Windows 2003/RedHat Linux
1-2 cpu 3-4 GB 15 GB disk $319 Windows 2003/RedHat Linux
1 cpu 2 GB 40 GB disk $253 Windows 2008/RedHat Linux
2 cpu 2 GB 40 GB disk $320 Windows 2008/RedHat Linux
1-2 cpu 3-4 GB 40 GB disk $343 Windows 2008/RedHat Linux

The following costs are for the data disk with backup.

Total cost of the service will be calculated as follows:
First year costs = the Annual Base Cost above plus the Total First Year Cost of the Data Disk with backup (based on the amount of disk needed)
Annual ongoing costs = the Annual Base Cost above plus the Annual Maintenance of the Data Disk with backup (based on the amount of disk needed)
